This episode, while not as superb as the last two episodes, remained as a great episode that deserves a 9/10. It certainly had high notes and those low notes hit exceedingly hard. I feel like it may seem like a minor downgrade compared to the last two episodes, but it still held massive importance to the show’s story and characters. Instead of summarizing the entire episode by a single word, I would rather label this episode as a bloodbath episode, meaning that it contained the death of a main character and tens of unnamed enemies against Osman. Also, the tone of the episode could be divided into two halves. The first half had a sad tone, but the bombastic events of the second half elicited a joyful and glorious tone.
Unfortunately, I will need to get into specific scenes once again quite soon. This is the SPOILER WARNING disclaimer. If you want an arbitrary review score, 9/10 (which is kind of generous of you decide to keep reading). If you have not watched this episode OR you do not want SPOILERS, STOP READING NOW!!!
Like I said before, the first half carried the depressing tone due to the death of Siddiq and the Goktug’s betrayal. Let’s take a look at both those sequences of scenes. Sofia’s slash to Siddiq’s neck with a poisoned dagger was both shocking and saddening. When he returned to his tribe, Bamsi reminded him of his promise before he said his Shahadah for the final time. When Burcin, the fiancée of Aybars if he wouldn’t have died, brought out her engaged man’s flag, I started to break out in tears. That was, easily, the best scene of the entire episode. As for Goktug’s betrayal, his stabbing into his brother’s abdomen emotionally stabs the viewers. Osman’s failed attempt to raid against Balgay hit much harder after Goktug reverted back into Kongar. Lastly, Aygul and Dundar grieved the deaths in their family in a truly saddening scene. Not as incredible as Siddiq’s final moments, but still very effective.
The triumphant tone took over once the raid against the tribe of Sabutay and Sofia failed. In a simply ingenious plan, the tables were turned on the invaders. Osman’s group of Alps, Selcan and the tribe’s other Hatuns, and the other allies received great ways to receive information on the raid. The episode ended on a cliffhanger, showing a final clash between Sabutay and Osman.
As much as I would like to give this episode a perfect score, I don’t feel like the episode did anything exceptional enough to deserve it. I believe Siddiq’s final scene (on screen) and the tonal shift were both masterful. Having the tribe being presumably raided before absolutely dispelling the infidels’ plan was a brilliant directing move. However, I don’t think the episode is memorable and the inclusion of Osman and Selcan’s posses into the tribe’s raid were mildly forced. I know I may have seemed negative throughout this review, but don’t get me wrong.
This is still a great episode, and its impact on the remainder of the show cannot be understated. I personally feel like one watch is sufficient for this episode, but a re-watch or two can prove quite enjoyable.
